Join us in Mexico for the adventure of a lifetime! We have teamed up with Björn Kjellberg, one of Europe’s most-respected tequila maestros, and a team of local producers, experts, bartenders, and agave lovers to bring you the ultimate agave expedition. You’ll experience an in-depth, hands-on, and immersive journey through the world of tequila, mezcal, agave, and the rich Mexican culture.
The 10-day expedition starts in Jalisco, the heart of tequila country and the home of its namesake, the town of Tequila. Once you’ve met up with your fellow explorers you’ll see how big producers like Sauza and smaller producers like Don Fulano handle all levels of their production. Explore the blue agave fields, and if the timing’s right, experience the harvest. You’ll then follow the agave through its cooking, fermenting, distilling, and maturation process. Finally, you’ll taste the end product in its freshest possible form.
If you’re still thirsty (and you will be) head down to La Capilla bar to quench your thirst at the birthplace of the Batanga. It’s one of the oldest bars in Tequila and the spirit of its founder Don Javier is always present. The bar has been won the award of the Best Bar in Latin America by World’s 50 Best Bars, and trust us, it’s definitely worthy of it!
Learn how the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) work to govern and protect tequila. Learn about the challenges and future for the industry from the people who know it better than anyone.
LOS ALTOS AND MASCOTA, JALISCO
Head into the highlands of Jalisco to visit brands like Olmeca, Cabeza and Calle 23 to see how different but beautiful one can be from the other. Spend a day and a night in Mascota, Jalisco to get to know the ancient and until now forgotten agave spirit raicilla. It’s a small, rural, handcrafted and true as a spirit can get. No promises, but maybe the opportunity to harvest your own agave will arise. Only Mayahuel, goddess of agave, can decide when it’s time to harvest, us mere mortals can only wait and hope.
For the mezcal lovers and those looking to go off-road and behind the scenes, we’ve got you covered – big time! Visit family producers of wild agave mezcal in surprisingly small and traditional operations. These are not the kind of tours the average tourist can even get information on. Björn has spent years and embarked on dozens of trips to Mexico to form relationships and help this small family industry. See some of the most traditional production techniques and taste the spirit in its freshest and rawest form; you can’t get this outside of Mexico.
Real Mexico is all about knowing where to go and who to talk to; luckily we’ve got that covered. Visit traditional Pulquerias and Cantinas for a no-nonsense experience and taste fresh Pulque. Experience one of Mexico’s most famous traditions, Mexican wrestling at Coliseo de Lucha Libre. Drink a Mexican hot chocolate in the shade of the world’s largest tree, El Árbol del Tule.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE EXPEDITION?
We’ve tried to include as much as possible to make it as easy and fun as possible for you and your fellow adventurers. Just get yourself to Guadalajara and we’ll take care of almost everything else, such as:
- Multiple tequila, mezcal, and raicilla distillery tours in Jalisco, and Oaxaca. Examples include Olmeca, Cabeza and Calle 23 (Los Altos), Sauza, Fortaleza, Arette and Don Fulano (Tequila), La Venenosa (Mascota), Bruxo (Oaxaca)
- Accommodation for 11 nights
- Domestic transportation like minibuses and flights to and from Oaxaca
- Breakfast and dinner every day
- An experienced and knowledgeable guide every day and exclusive access to all of the producers
THINGS TO REMEMBER
Seasons change and 90-year-old bartenders take the day off now and again so we may have to adjust the schedule at times. Some of the events described above are dependent on the weather, timing, and availability. Whilst we can’t guarantee every single point; we can guarantee that you’ll learn more than if you were to watch a million YouTube videos and that you’ll have a once-in-a-lifetime experience with like-minded compadres.
The expedition has a limited number of places and we’re sure that they’ll fill up very quickly. The lucky travellers will learn an incredible amount, have authentic experiences, discover a fascinating culture, and make unforgettable memories. This is an expedition like no other, perfect for anyone with a love of agave and a desire for discovery.
