It has long been touted as a trend to look out for, recently supported by Whole Foods, who predict that botanical and herbal infused products will dominate food and drink trends over the next few years.
It’s easy to see why; with the many benefits that floral and plant based ingredients bring, along with a fresh, punchy flavour, it’s a natural evolution for the drinks industry.
From ciders to spirits, teas to wine, let’s have a look at some of the most unusual, unlikely and undeniably tasty ranges in the drinks market today.
English Heritage Nettle Wine
Made in small batches, there’s something rather charming (and very British) about English Heritage’s award-winning collection. This dry, crisp wine even includes an added touch of locally picked nettle leaves! Nettle leaves are known for their anti-inflammatory benefits, and are often used to treat urinary issues. At £10.50 a bottle, the only sting this wine leaves is in your pocket
Old Curiosity Lavender and Echinacea Gin
Encased in a purple, almost medicinal bottle, this curious pairing of ingredients creates a fantastically floral flavour. Indeed, there’s magic in the bottle, not just when poured (see it change colour right before your eyes!) but in its key ingredients too. Lavender is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in treating insomnia and restlessness, while Echinacea is used as a popular herb to prevent colds. This spirit is delightful with a delicate mixer, such as club soda or tonic water.
Birds Botanical Spirit Drink
Packed with flavours reminiscent of Christmas markets, this German spirit combines distilled Riesling wine with a rage of potent infusions. These include clove, voatsiperifery pepper, liquorice and star anise, along with berries and fruit for a sweet uplift. The result is a fruity, spicy drink great for cocktails or mixing with juice for a mocktail. It also contains key ingredient ‘angelica root’ which may help with a range of problems, from heartburn and flatulence to insomnia and arthritis.
Twining’s Cold Infuse, Rose Lemonade
When Twining’s recently introduced their cold infusion range for water bottles, we knew they were onto something. Their light, delicate flavours perk up drinks while bringing added botanical benefits. This fusion uses hibiscus cold brew tea with the delicious and natural flavours of rose and lemon. The health benefits of hibiscus tea are known to help with cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as aiding digestion. Some research suggests that it may even help reduce the risk of cancer.
Square One, Botanical Vodka
Dubbed ‘Eden in a bottle’, American brand Square One has outdone themselves with this 100% organic rye vodka. Its standout fresh taste is attributed to its eight botanical ingredients; rosemary (good for digestion), lavender (can help you get to sleep), pear (for your immune system), rose (anti-inflammatory properties), camomile (helps with digestion), lemon verbena (helpful with joint trouble), coriander (rich in Vitamin C and K), and citrus peel (rich in Vitamin C). Serve with lemonade, fruit juice or cola, for a distinctive vodka twist!
Rekorderlig Grapefruit and Rosemary Cider
The cider revolution continues to inspire with a range of fruity flavours in this ever-growing market. Fresh from the crisp, spring waters of Sweden, this pear cider is blended with grapefruit and infused with a hint of rosemary to produce a light pink colour. Among its notable benefits, rosemary is said to help improve concentration and brain aging, as well as aid digestion.

With its delicious taste and complex blend of aromas, the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit has become mainstream.
