Given the continuing demand for student reviews, we went ahead and asked three of our international students about their EBS experience, to get a proper EBS Copenhagen review. So why did they choose Copenhagen, what do they think about the city and the Danish people in general after spending two and a half weeks here? And why join a bartender school?

Firstly, they all agreed that you get a lot of experience and improve quickly throughout the course. None of them expected it to be as hard or intense as it is, but they all found that a very good thing. “The level of the course exceeded my expectations, it’s like a whole new world opening in front of your eyes”; Ned said.

Another thing they agree on is the whole EBS experience, which they really like. You get a lot of new friends and the fact that everybody is there for the same reason, makes it very easy to talk to each other. People tend to become closer pretty fast even though the group is from 5-6 different nationalities.

Why did you take the course and what did you get out of it?

Lina:
“I had been bartending in a bar in Hamburg, but it was mainly long drinks and draft beer, and I believed there was something more to bartending. After 2 weeks of the course I now know there is – I know a lot more about the different spirits, ways to work efficiently in the bar and I know a lot more about drinks and cocktails than I did before.”

Satu:
“I had been looking for a bar job for quite some time. I couldn’t get any because of my lack of experience. I’ve dreamed of opening my own bar, but had problems to get into the business. I was recommended the European Bartender School since they provide a lot of tools and skills required as a bartender and it would help me get a job and a foot in the business. Since I’ve started with EBS I have to agree. I have learned a lot about how to act behind the bar in order to be fast and professional and I’ve learned how to invent and make up my own drinks.”

Why did you choose Copenhagen as a destination and do you like the city as an upcoming bartender?

Ned:
“I had been to Copenhagen once before and thought it was a cool place, so I decided to go for Copenhagen as a destination. The barscene in Copenhagen is really interesting and has a lot of cool places. I would like to have a bartender gig alongside with the studies once I start those this summer.”

Satu:
“I choose Copenhagen because it was the most convenient – Copenhagen is easy to travel to and I wanted to do the course as fast as possible – Copenhagen came in convenient and I haven’t regretted it. I actually didn’t expect much from the city, but I was really surprised and I really like the city, and now I am considering to move here after the course to live and eventually start bartending.”

Lina:
“I had never been to Copenhagen before so I thought I try something new. Same as Satu I wanted the first course possible in the season so I went to Copenhagen. There is a lot of good bars with high standards and really good service around here. There’s a place for every need and taste, all with good and cool atmospheres, depending on whether you want good cocktails, certain kinds of music or just have a blast. In general the standard of the bars is high here in Copenhagen.”

How do you like the location of the school and the accommodation?

Ned:
“It’s pretty central the hostel and everything you need is within walking distance. The school is close to the hostel and easy to get to by train or bus.”

Satu:
“There are good places around here to eat at – I like to eat healthy and there’s a lot of places where you can, pretty close by.”

What is it like as a foreigner living in Copenhagen during the course?

Ned:
“People in Copenhagen have no problem speaking English and are all really kind and helpful. I was surprised on how willing people where to help with directions and general questions, I’m not used to that kind of hospitality from back home between strangers.”

Satu:
“I was positively surprised and happy when even the man behind the counter in the grocery inquired how I am doing here and took an interest to the fact that I wasn’t Danish. It made me feel very welcome.”

In conclusion, I’d say that the guys hit Copenhagen and the course on the head; the city caters to the bartenders who want to see their profession “out in the wild”, and after the initial shock of what you’ve gotten yourself into, the crew of instructors swiftly whips you into shape. So if you always wanted to become a bartender, or if your existing bartender skills center on tapping beers and pouring drinks, EBS Copenhagen is going to take your skills to the next level. You will be ready for the big league, whether it is in Copenhagen itself or any other high-end cocktail venue.
