The Tequila and Mezcal Expedition is a unique expedition by us, here, at the European Bartender School. It gives you a chance to experience the incredible Mexican culture, whilst learning about tequila and mezcal.

In cooperation with local producers, experts and bartenders, you'll gain an incredible insight into the industry. Over the course of 10 days, Bjӧrn Kjellberg, a world-renowned tequila connoisseur, takes you on a magical journey across enchanting locations in Mexico, exploring distilleries and agave fields.

“Each trip is unique but provides the same solid foundation of experiencing, learning
and discovering from the heart,”

Bjorn Kjellberg - world-famous tequila master and board of education member at EBS.

What do you do on the Expedition?

Take an incredible journey through Mexico and its amazing agave fields. Take in the culture and the expert knowledge of the locals, whilst immersing yourself in the world of tequila. Here are just some of the activities and experiences you will be doing whilst in Mexico...

Experience tequila in Jalisco

Tequila trip EBS Mexico

The adventure begins in Jalisco, the heart of tequila country and the home of its namesake, the town of Tequila. Here, you'll gain insight into all stages of the production process. Whether they're small or large producers like Sauza or Don Fulano, the expedition covers both, offering special insight into their workings. You'll also explore the blue agave fields and follow the plant through all stages of production, ended by sampling the finished product.

You'll spend an evening at La Capilla, one of the oldest bars in Tequila and the birthplace of the Batanga cocktail. La Capilla was successfully awarded first place in World’s 50 Best Bars ‘Best Bar in Latin America’ ranking. Despite its popularity, La Capilla has managed to retain a strong sense of authenticity.
This experience also offers the exclusive opportunity to learn all about the challenges that the tequila industry faces from the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila). The CRT are the regulators of the tequila industry, so you'll see how they strive to govern and protect this precious industry year-on-year.

Stay overnight in Los Altos and Mascota

Tequila expedition

Those on the expedition will venture into the highlands of Jalisco to visit brands such as Olmeca, Cabeza and Calle 23. Experience first-hand what makes each brand and their individual processes unique. Then, stay overnight in Mascota, Jalisco to discover the ancient and rural art of raicilla. This is a lesser-know spirit distilled from agave and, if conditions allow for it, you can also take part in the extraordinary agave harvest.

Taste mezcal in Oaxaca

For this part of the adventure, you will travel off the beaten track to visit traditional, family-run wild agave mezcal operations. Here, you'll be sampling the spirit in its purest form. This is a particularly unique aspect of the expedition that is not accessible to the average tourist. It's solely possible for you because of the relationships that Björn Kjellberg has forged with local producers throughout his career.

Immerse yourself in Mexican culture

Along this journey, participants will be exposed to authentic aspects of Mexican culture. This includes sampling fresh pulque in traditional pulquerías and cantinas, watching Mexican wrestling at the Coliseo de Lucha Libre and drinking Mexican hot chocolate under the shade of the world’s largest tree, El Árbol del Tule. It's a truly authentic Mexican experience.
