Why is the 13th May World Cocktail Day?

While the term ‘cocktail’ has records dating back from 1798, it wasn’t until 1806 that we finally got the answer. When Harry Croswell asked “What is a Cocktail?” in an issue of The Balance and Columbian Repository published on 13th May, it detailed the first description of a cocktail ever recorded:

“Cocktail, then, is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.”

Since that day, the 13th May has been commemorated by thousands of cocktail lovers and bars in the world and has, of course, turned into the perfect excuse for a party.

This World Cocktail Day, we got together with our EBS schools and invited them to create some awesome cocktails. Here are some of our favourites:

"The Fall of Midsummer"

The name of this cocktail commemorates the midsummer celebrations that take place in June. Using a signature spirit of Scandinavia, Aquavit, The Fall of Midsummer is a cocktail with a surprisingly sweet taste.

Immerse yourself in Spanish culture with this delicious cocktail. Our cocktail gives you the delicate sweetness of honey alongside spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg to give you that fiery flavour of Spain.

Try it the next time you order tapas or simply enjoy it on a sunny day under a palm tree on the beaches of Mallorca!
