It’s that time of year again, when we raise a hot toddy to Guy Fawkes while cooing over bright explosions in the sky! With Fireworks Night falling on a Monday this year, you can expect an extended weekend of celebrations, from 3-5 November.
Ever the perfect excuse for a get-together, you’ll need to have some winter-warmers on hand to keep up your spirits in the frosty winter weather.
If you’re hosting a firework display of your own, and having guests around for the occasion, you’ll want to impress with some warming treats. The good news is that hot toddies are easy to rustle up, and fill the air with festive spicy notes.
Hot Mulled Apple Juice
For the designated drivers and non-drinkers, a hot mulled apple juice is the perfect answer to a cold November night.
For a batch of six, you will need 2.5 pints of apple juice, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 cloves, 6 allspice berries, 4 tablespoons of maple syrup, the peel of 1 orange and 1 lemon.
In a large saucepan, pour in the apple juice and maple syrup. Add the cinnamon sticks, berries, cloves, orange and lemon peel to a small muslin spice bag, make sure the strings are tightly drawn and add this to the mixture. Put on a medium heat for up to 10 minutes so that the mixture is hot but not boiling. Remove from the heat, and take the spice bag out. Serve in mugs with a ladle, and a gingerbread biscuit for the perfect side treat.
Baileys Slow Cooker Hot Chocolate
One for the grown-ups, this creamy delight will make you glow from the inside out! If you have a slow cooker, then it’s super easy and quick to throw together, and can be kept on a low heat all night, while the party is in full swing.
You’ll need a litre of whole milk, 400g of condensed milk, 300ml of double cream, 30 grams of cocoa powder or drinking chocolate, 210ml of Baileys Irish Cream, 150g of dark chocolate drops, whipped cream and mini marshmallows.
To get cooking, add the chocolate drops to the slow cooker on a HIGH heat, and add all the ingredients except the Baileys. With the lid firmly on, cook for an hour and a half, stirring every 20-30mins. Once you’ve done this, add the Baileys Irish cream and put the cooker on low for serving.
Use a ladle to fill oversized mugs, top with whipped cream and drops of marshmallows for a comforting drink that will keep you warm while you watch the fireworks!
If you’re heading to a pub for a fireworks display, be prepared for it to be incredibly busy! The key here is to get in and out as quickly as possible, so knowing what to order in advance will help. Here are a few classics for Bonfire night:
Bangers & Beer: Most pubs will put on barbecues or grills for fireworks night, and there’s no greater tradition that bangers (sausages) washed down with the golden nectar of beer. When in doubt, opt for a local brew.
Warm Cider: This is the time of year when most pubs crack open the festive stock, starting with warm variants of our favourite drinks. Warm cider is a must-try drink, and you’ll find it difficult to stop!
Mulled Wine: With Christmas just a few weeks away, it’s time to get in the festive spirit with a fragrant drop of mulled wine, a delicious taste of winter in a glass!
Winter Pimms: Look out for winter pimms in all good pubs and bars. Often served in a jug, this is fun for sharing with friends, with its inviting fruity brandy taste.
