With the exclusive participation of local producers, experts and bartenders alike, this expedition offers participants the incredible opportunity to experience Mexican culture, learn everything they need to know about tequila and mezcal and create unforgettable memories. Over the course of 10 days, Bjӧrn Kjellberg, a world-renowned tequila connoisseur, will take participants on a unique journey across enchanting locations in Mexico to explore tequila and mezcal distilleries and agave fields.
“Each trip is unique but provides the same solid foundation of experiencing, learning
and discovering from the heart,” - Bjorn Kjellberg, world-famous tequila master and board of education member at EBS.
Journey through Mexico, its distilleries and agave fields
The adventure begins in Jalisco, the heart of tequila country and the home of its namesake, the town of Tequila. Here, participants will gain insight into all stages of the production process of both large and small producers such as Sauza and Don Fulano. They will also explore the blue agave fields and follow the agave through all stages of production to then sample the end product.
Participants will spend an evening at La Capilla, one of the oldest bars in Tequila and the birthplace of the Batanga cocktail, which was awarded first place in World’s 50 Best Bars ‘Best Bar in Latin America’ ranking. Despite its popularity, La Capilla has managed to retain a strong sense of authenticity.
This experience also offers the exclusive opportunity to learn all about the challenges that the tequila industry faces from the CRT (Consejo Regulador del Tequila) itself, and how they strive to govern and protect this precious industry.
Los Altos and Mascota, Jalisco
Members of the expedition will venture into the highlands of Jalisco to visit brands such as Olmeca, Cabeza and Calle 23 to experience first-hand what makes each brand and their individual processes unique. They will stay overnight in Mascota, Jalisco to discover the ancient and rural art of raicilla, a lesser-know spirit distilled from agave and, if conditions allow for it, take part in the agave harvest.
For this part of the adventure, participants travel off the beaten track to visit traditional, family-run wild agave mezcal operations and sample the spirit in its purest form. This is a particularly unique aspect of the expedition that is not accessible to the average tourist. It is solely possible for participants of this tour thanks to the relationships that Björn Kjellberg has forged with local producers throughout his career.
Along this journey, participants will be exposed to authentic aspects of Mexican culture such as sampling fresh pulque in traditional pulquerías and cantinas, watching Mexican wrestling at the Coliseo de Lucha Libre and drinking Mexican hot chocolate under the shade of the world’s largest tree, El Árbol del Tule.
