You’ve gazed at them across the room, flirted across the bar, and now things are starting to heat up. Maybe you’re planning a date, have gone on a few, or just need to see that other people understand. Here’s our top ten things you need to know before dating a bartender.

So you want to be a bartender? Check out our courses and discover where bartending can take you.

1 . Say goodbye to any dates planned more than a week in advance

Yeah those spontaneous date ideas that you have, throw them away now. Bartenders tend to work on rotas, so you’re going to have to be pretty chilled to deal with the uncertainty of their schedules.

2 . Oh, and wave goodbye to weekend breaks

“Living for the weekend” just doesn’t apply to bartenders. Whilst you’re working Monday to Friday, their schedule might be more like Thursday to Tuesday. That last minute weekend break in Rome? Not going to happen. But think about it another way, flights are cheaper during the week #winning!

3 . Prepare to embrace your inner green eyed monster

Your S.O will be the centre of everyone’s attention behind the bar, hey it might have even been you once flirting on the other side of the bar. You’re going to get jealous but just remember, it’s part of their job to have charisma and entertain the customers. You’re their number one.

4 . They’re used to being the centre of attention

Following on from point number three, your partner is used to being in the spotlight. This will come in handy when introducing them to your friends and family, especially to your Great Aunt Mildrid who is just dying to get his opinion on her knitted cat jumpers…

5 . Black is back when you’re dating a bartender

We’re sure that you’ve heard of 50 Shades of Grey, so get prepared for 50 Shades of Black and before you worry, no, your boyfriend/girlfriend isn’t part of some emo cult or movie franchise. The simple truth is that when they spill a blue alcopop down themselves, black doesn’t show up the fluorescent drink!

6 . Their natural scent is…something else

No amount of aftershave, perfume or cologne will cover up the smell that they bring home with them after work. A unique mix of stale beer, spilt cocktails, and Jagermeister. Breathe it in, then tell them to get in the shower.

7 . They’ll always have a story

Whether it’s about Alan’s (the local mechanic) attempts to break into the music industry, or the hen party that lost the bride, they will always cheer you up with their strange stories.

8 . You can hang out with them at work

Right, don’t go full on stalker with this one, but dating a bartender has its perks, and hanging out with your S.O when the bar is quiet is one of them. Just don’t come in at 10.30pm needing attention – you won’t be getting it!

9 . They’re great listeners

Bartenders are therapists and advisors, amongst a hundred other things, so they know how to listen. They’ve listened to drunken ramblings and sincere rants, they know how to truly listen to your problems.

10 . Free drinks!

Our last point, but one of our favourites. Dating a bartender comes with the perk of free drinks! They’ll make you the best mojito you’ve ever had and you’ll have the best relationship of your life with a bartender, trust us – we know!
