Tour the land of tequila and its best distilleries
“I can talk about it and I can show you pictures, but you won’t get it until you come here.”
Björn Kjellberg, one of Europe’s most respected tequila maestros and creator of our tour.
Let us take you on the trip of a lifetime with our Tequila and Mezcal Tour across Mexico. Spend ten days exploring agave plantations in Jalisco and Oaxaca with expert local producers and taste their carefully crafted spirits right there in the distillery. You’ll get a backstage pass to visit top-notch brands such as Patrón, Arette, Calle 23, Fortaleza, and many more!
An expedition to make you expert
Roam agave fields and watch this magical plant transform as it’s cooked, fermented, distilled, and aged to become tequila or mezcal. Sip the spirits in their final form straight from the still - you can’t do that outside Mexico!
You’ll get privileged access to both traditional family-run businesses and big brands. Thanks to our special connections in Mexico, you’ll get to go behind the scenes at distilleries where tourists aren’t permitted.
Taste fresh pulque, tequila’s prehistoric relative that was reserved specially for Aztec gods. It’s a great option to wash down the rich meals you’ll gobble up at local cantinas - chilaquiles, tamales, tostadas…
Experience Mexican culture in its authenticity
You might have an idea of Mexico in your mind, but there’s nothing like experiencing the real thing. This colourful land of culture is guaranteed to surprise and delight your five senses.
An intensive ten-day tour with tequila maestros
This epic expedition was created by one of Europe’s most knowledgeable tequila specialists, Björn Kjellberg. Mexico is his second home, so you can rest assured he’s picked all the top tequila and mezcal spots for you to visit. Every day, expert local producers will share their wisdom and welcome you into their culture. Let the immersive journey begin…
The tour activities may vary a little depending on the season and the interests of the group. You’ll be constantly on the move, discovering new places across Tequila, Guadalajara, and Oaxaca. The tour begins and ends in Jalisco. Don’t worry about logistics, though, we take care of organising all internal transport (including a domestic flight!).
Thanks to our special connections in Mexico, you’ll get to go behind the scenes at local distilleries. You’ll discover both ends of the manufacturing spectrum: watching how big brands handle large-scale production and getting an insight into traditional, family-run businesses. Discover how the masters craft their famous spirits from start to finish. You might get exclusive access to any of these distilleries: Arette, Patrón, Cascahuin, Calle 23, Fortaleza, Del Maguey, Montelobos.
“Who are they?” we hear you ask. Jimadores are the workers who slice down the agave plants to obtain the agave heart for baking. As you’ll see, it’s certainly hard work! The next step is to shred the agave core and extract its ever-so-important juice. This liquid is called mosto and must be fermented, distilled, and aged to produce the tequila we know today.
As for mezcaleros, it might be easier to guess what they do… They make mezcal! Mezcaleros are typically born into the role, descending from generations of family members who have been doing the same for decades. They take great pride in their craft and follow the traditional production methods in palenques - semi-open wooden distilleries.
Sport? Entertainment? Insanity? Witness live Mexican wrestling and decide for yourself. This freestyle wrestling began gaining popularity in Mexico in the 20th century, and today there are many famous ‘hero’ luchadores, like El Santo or Gory Guerrero. With the brightly coloured masks, lycra fight suits, and melodramatic acting, the experience is both thrilling and theatrical.
After tasting all these punchy spirits, you’ll certainly be feeling the heat. Take some time to cool off in Oaxaca’s natural infinity pools. Enjoy the stunning views across the valley and see if you catch sight of the frozen waterfall.
Stroll the vibrant streets of Tequila, Guadalajara, and Oaxaca. Mexican cities are on a different frequency from any other. Catch live music, enticing food stalls, and bright murals at every turn! Sip cocktails at the most famous bars, dip into museums, and catch famous festivals (if you’re lucky!). Spoiler: Día de Muertos will leave you amazed! And don’t forget the awe-inspiring Aztec and Mayan ruins. You’ll be sure to discover more about Mexico’s fascinating history as the trip unfolds.
